Kiting is an exciting sport that connects us with the power of nature, but it's crucial that our love for the wind and waves doesn't harm the environment we play in. Being an eco-conscious kiter means making mindful choices that minimise our ecological footprint, from the gear we use to the way we interact with natural habitats.
A few tips and reminders on how we can practice these below:
Take care of your gear
your kite gear is typically made of virgin materials (some companies are innovating to recycled materials) so make sure you make that last as long as you can
learn to repair your gear
once it's finished its life as a kite, take it to upcyclers or upcycle yourself
Be mindful of what you're bringing into the water
this includes sunscreen /zinc (opt for reef-safe options)
try and make sure what you've got on you stays on you
pick up anything you see that doesn't belong in the ocean or launch spots
Mind your surroundings
be aware of your impact on the ecosystem, watch where you're stepping and launching from
respect the locals and avoid disturbing wildlife
Reduce your footprint
carpool with friends to reach destinations
support or volunteer for ocean and land conservation projects
make sure you leave no trace, leave with everything you've brought with you
By adopting sustainable practices, we can protect our beloved kiting spots and contribute to a healthier planet for future generations.
